Consumers from Mato Grosso do Sul will hit the brakes when it comes to buying gifts and throwing a party to celebrate Mother’s Day. The drop should reach 7% in sales. It just won’t be bigger because thanks to the boom in the economy, with the low unemployment rate, there was an increase in the number of people going shopping.

The finding is from the purchasing intention survey carried out between the 2nd and 8th of this month in the main cities of Mato Grosso do Sul, according to the IPFMS (Fecomércio Research Institute of Mato Grosso do Sul). Despite the drop, gifts and celebrations are expected to generate R$478.8 million this year, compared to R$515.7 million last year.

The survey shows a 7.59% drop in spending on gifts, which should fluctuate from R$242.2 million last year, already corrected by the IPCA, to R$223.8 million this year. The average value will fall by 8.36%, from R$231.13 to R$211.79. On the other hand, the percentage of people who go shopping increased from 70.57% last year to 71.16% this year.

There will also be a 6.7% reduction in spending on celebrations, which is expected to go from R$273.4 million last year to R$254.9 million this year. Average spending fell from R$229.09 to R$219.22.

“The numbers show that consumers are more restrained, with a slightly lower movement than last year, due to the forecast of lower average spending on gifts and celebrations, considering the real value. The percentage of people who will buy gifts has become a little higher and this is positive”, explained IPF-MS economist, Regiane Dedé de Oliveira.

The survey showed that 71.16% of respondents intend to give gifts and 78.28% will hold celebrations. Among those present, the preference is for clothes (29%), perfumes and cosmetics (26%) and shoes (18%). In-person shopping in physical stores will be the majority’s option (87.26%) and the mother’s choice (39.97%) and the quality of the product (39.91%) will be decisive in the purchase decision.

“Merchants need to be aware of the trend towards paying in cash, through discounts, a preference of 77% of respondents, and also take into account in their strategies that good service, installment conditions and variety are important items for the purchasing decision”, advised the IPF-MS economist.
