Lawyer distributes collection of 20 thousand books to public libraries in MG
How many books are needed to give gifts to an entire city? In Cruzília, a city with just over 15 thousand inhabitants in the south of Minas, the collection of a single resident would be enough. His private library stores 20 thousand books that began to be donated this Tuesday (23), in celebration of the World Book Day.
“The best way is to circulate the book. With some weight at first, but now I’ve freed myself too. Today I’m already feeling very pleased with the distribution. In my city, 2 thousand copies distributed. Then in the neighboring city, another 2 thousand. I will distribute until the end of the collection”, says lawyer Adolfo Maurício Pereira.
The collection of 60 years of history began to be built since Adolfo’s childhood. The room, which used to be a public library, is now too small for the number of copies: there are 20,000 units.
“At the age of six, as soon as I became literate, I began to develop a very intense passion for books. I started with comic books, comic books, usually of American origin, but I soon discovered Monteiro Lobato and other children’s or young adult writers. At the age of ten I was already in contact with Machado de Assis, Aloísio Azevedo and other great classics of national literature”, says Adolfo.
Authors of Brazilian literature, foreign writers, genres for all tastes. Among the works, there are even books written more than a century ago, such as one from 1876.
“It got to a point where my house couldn’t hold it anymore. I built a fairly large area, a building measuring more than 400 m². And in this construction, I created a cultural center, where I kept the library, with approximately 18 to 20 thousand volumes. It maintained the library and even a small museum, as well as literary and cultural events,” he reports.
However, keeping all of this in good condition became a challenge over time.
“I’m even moved by this situation, but there comes a time when I can no longer preserve it. My daughters, my wife, are all voracious readers too, but they live in an apartment. And age has arrived, here comes what? Air conditioning, server for permanent cleaning, moths, termites, mold. There came a time when I said: What is the best way to access this collection?”.
