The dissatisfaction is visible when councilor Gilson Barreto, one of the founders of the PSDB in the 1980s, talks about the party’s current political scenario and the refusal of the Tucana leadership to support the re-election of Ricardo Nunes (MDB) in 2024. He, who is leader of the Tucana bench in the São Paulo City Council and vice-president of the provisional committee that leads the municipal directory, announced his disaffiliation from the party.

The party, until then the largest in the Chamber, alongside the PT, with eight councilors, now finds itself facing the concrete possibility of losing all its representatives in this party window – the stampede will take place until next Friday, the deadline for be affiliated with the party you will represent at the polls in October. The party’s leadership minimizes the episode, saying that the issue is a “turned page” and that the decision not to close with Nunes was taken democratically, by 9 votes to 2, among historical activists who make up the municipal directory.

In conversation with the Estadão, the councilor criticized the party leadership and complained that decisions are made “from the top down” in Brasília and Rio Grande do Sul – a reference to leaders at the federal level, such as the governor of Rio Grande do Sul Eduardo Leite and the president of the party, Marconi Perillo. For him, there is a “lack of understanding” regarding the continuity of the management of Bruno Covas, Tucano mayor who died in 2021.
