Terra Livre Camp brings together indigenous people in Mato Grosso

CUIABÁ (MT) – Indigenous people from 43 ethnicities from Mato Grosso hold the Terra Livre Camp (ATL) in Praça Ulisses Guimarães, in the capital Cuiabá, with a program that began on Tuesday, 2, and continues until Friday, 5. In In the urban area, the event aims to discuss indigenous issues and claim rights.

This is the second edition of ATL in the capital of Mato Grosso, which has the theme “Building our territorial and rights perspectives”. According to the Federation of Indigenous Peoples of Mato Grosso (Fepoimt), the expectation is that the camp will bring together more than 400 indigenous people from different peoples of the State.

The first secretary of Fepoimt, Darlene Taukane, highlights that the camp provides visibility to indigenous people and that, at the end of the event, they will create a document with demands, which will be taken to government authorities and national representations.

“This is the second edition of the event. Last year was the first, it gave people visibility, we got to know each other better. We strengthen our movement internally, we are 43 people, and this unites us more and more”, highlights the CENARIUM MAGAZINE.

At the current meeting, representatives of indigenous communities will meet with government authorities and organizations to address issues that directly affect the existence of original peoples, such as guaranteeing land demarcation, the right to free, prior and informed consultation, environmental protection, regulation of the carbon, impact of dams on rivers.

Mining projects, territorial planning and hydroelectric projects are also on the agenda for discussion, as well as guaranteeing access to essential health and education services.

The first secretary of Fepoimt also points out that the document that will be prepared in Mato Grosso will also be taken to the ATL national meeting in Brasília, which should bring together more than five thousand indigenous people from all regions of the country between the 22nd and 26th. Of april.

Taukane highlights that unity is already the hallmark of ATL in Cuiabá. “We get to know the reality of the people, the difficulties, advances and challenges”, emphasizes. “We are part of the society of the people of Mato Grosso. We bring crafts, our songs, our dances, so it’s a time to share, because we are all that, it’s our cultural wealth”emphasizes the visibility of the camp.

Throughout the event, the indigenous people are camped in the square, located on one of the main avenues of the capital of Mato Grosso, close to the headquarters of the Executive and Justice Branches. Surrounded by large buildings, people share struggles and culture.
