Experts on the subject seek to pass on hydrological information with excellence to protect the population
On Tuesday (02/04), the State Secretariat for Rural Production (Sepror) was present at a meeting held in the auditorium of the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB/Manaus). The meeting focused on informing about the preparations that the state must have following the “1st Amazon Flood Alert 2024”, which brought to this first meeting quality hydrological information that will support decision-making and guarantee the protection of the population in relation to extreme hydrological events.
The project operates through the regular availability of hydrological information, through the weekly publication of monitoring bulletins, as well as the constant supply of data to the press. One of the main measures includes forecasting the maximum level to be reached by the Negro River in the capital Manaus. Since 2022, the event has been called “Amazon Flood Alert”, encompassing river level forecasts for Manaus on the Negro River, Manacapuru on the Solimões River, Itacoatiara and Parintins on the Amazon River.
Furthermore, the alert offers a comprehensive analysis of the behavior of the main rivers in the Western Amazon, including the precipitation volumes observed in recent months and those expected by forecast models.
Heitor Liberato, representative of Sepror at the meeting, highlighted the importance of anticipating and preparing for possible hydrological events, emphasizing the need for effective preventive and response actions on the part of authorities and the population, specifically related to the primary sector.
The Government of Amazonas is committed to ensuring the safety of its population and the well-being of the region’s inhabitants in the face of the challenges faced during river floods. On the occasion, the Civil Defense of Amazonas issued a warning about the possible drought in 2024.
