Shooting star is seen in the SC sky; VIDEO

A meteor was recorded in the sky of Santa Catarina by a monitoring camera in Monte Castelo, in the north of Santa Catarina. The celestial body, popularly known as “shooting star”, lasted about 4 seconds and ended with a small explosion.

According to amateur astronomer Jocimar Justino, the explosion indicates a sudden increase in brightness observed at the end of its path (watch the video above).

The image was taken at 9:26 pm on Monday (1st) and was captured by the cameras of the Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network (BRAMON), an open and collaborative organization formed by volunteers, including Justino.

According to the astronomer, the estimate is that the phenomenon occurred over Joinville, the most populous city in Santa Catarina also located in the north of Santa Catarina. Due to the high altitude at which meteors usually occur, the phenomenon may also have been visible in neighboring states.

According to Justino, the meteor is a luminous phenomenon:

“Meteors can be caused by the entry of any solid object into the Earth’s atmosphere. They are generally caused by meteoroids, which are rocks up to one meter tall. If they exceed one meter, they are called asteroids. Meteorites are rocks that eventually survive the heat generated in the atmospheric entry and end up reaching the ground”, he stated.

Camera captures more than 200 meteors in the SC sky

On May 3, 2023, a meteor was seen crossing the sky and disappearing inside a cloud. The recording was made by an amateur astronomer’s camera (watch below).
