Expert explains how healthy eating habits from childhood can help prevent and control high blood pressure in children.

High blood pressure, often considered a concern only for adults, is becoming increasingly common among children and adolescents. According to data from the Ministry of Health, it is estimated that between 3% and 15% of children in Brazil are affected by the condition. But what can parents do to help control their children’s blood pressure? The answer may be on the plate.

“Food plays a fundamental role in controlling high blood pressure in children”, says Carolina Sousa, nutritionist and professor of the Nutrition course at Estácio. “Making healthy food choices from an early age can help prevent and control the disease.”

So what are these healthy food choices? Here are some simple tips from the teacher for incorporating a healthy diet into children’s routines:

1. Increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables: “Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber, essential vitamins and minerals that help keep blood pressure under control. Try to include a variety of colors at each meal to ensure a wide range of nutrients.”

2. Reduce your consumption of processed foods rich in sodium: “Processed foods, such as snacks, fast food and canned foods, tend to be high in sodium, which can increase blood pressure. Choose fresh, homemade foods whenever possible and read food labels to make healthier choices.”

3. Choose lean sources of protein: “Opt for lean sources of protein, such as fish, skinless chicken, eggs and legumes. These options are lower in saturated fat, which can contribute to increased blood pressure.”

4. Encourage healthy hydration: “Water is essential for cardiovascular health. Encourage your children to drink water throughout the day and avoid sugary drinks, such as soda and processed juices, which can contribute to weight gain and increased blood pressure.”

5. Promote balance and moderation: “It’s not about banning foods, but about promoting a healthy balance. Allow your children to enjoy their favorite foods occasionally, but in moderate portions.”

Estácio’s Nutrition teacher advises that the objective is not to make drastic changes overnight, but rather to make small, gradual changes to the little ones’ diet. Encouraging their involvement in preparing healthy meals and snacks and making the eating experience fun and educational are other facilitators recommended by the nutritionist in changing habits.

“A healthy diet can be delicious and fun for the whole family”, emphasizes Carolina Sousa. “By making conscious food choices and creating healthy habits from an early age, you are taking a big step towards protecting your children’s cardiovascular health.”, she concludes.
