Rio – Military firefighter Sabrina Waisfougel Monteiro, who was off duty, was shot in the chest at around 2pm this Tuesday (2), in Tijuca, in the North Zone of Rio. She was hit during an exchange of gunfire between a police officer military member of the 6th BPM (Tijuca) and criminals who were trying to steal a car on Rua Moraes e Silva and Rua São Francisco Xavier. She was taken in serious condition by residents to Hospital Israelita Albert Sabin, in the Maracanã neighborhood, also in the North Zone.

According to the Military Police, an agent who patrols the area on foot was in a commercial establishment hydrating himself during work hours when he was informed by members of the public about the attempted robbery. He caught a driver being robbed by four men on three motorcycles.

Upon noticing the police presence, the criminals opened fire on the officer, who fired in response. The exchange of fire took place meters away from the Military College and also close to the Pedro II College, in a very busy spot.

Two criminals entered the stolen car with the intention of fleeing. The corporation reported that, on the escape route, they crashed the vehicle into a tree and abandoned it on Rua Ibituruna com Moraes e Silva. None of the suspects have been captured so far.

The woman was hit when the criminals left the car. It is not known whether the shot came from the suspects or the police. The location was preserved for forensic examination, and the case was registered at the 18th DP (Praça da Bandeira).

Sabrina, 45 years old, is a 1st sergeant and works at the Medical Expertise Center of the Military Fire Brigade of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ). She is clinically stable, but in the ICU, where she will undergo a surgical procedure. The corporation’s General Health Directorate is monitoring the evolution of the case.
