Between January 2023 and March 2024, RS-239 recorded 12 fatal accidents in the section between kilometers 13 and 48. The data refers to episodes that resulted in death until the police report was registered.

The rate is 42.8% lower than the number of cases recorded in 2021, for example, when 21 fatal accidents were counted between Estância Velha and Taquara.

Even so, deaths on the highway continue to worry pedestrians, drivers who travel the stretch daily, as well as municipal authorities and the Military Brigade Road Command (CRBM).

In a survey carried out by the Sapiranga Road Group at the request of the NH Newspaperit was possible to verify that Sapiranga and Parobé share the top ranking of deaths in RS-239, with four occurrences each.

Soon after, the Novo Hamburgo section appears as the most lethal, with three accidents resulting in death.

In Araricá, there was only one fatal accident. In the stretches of Campo Bom, Nova Hartz and Taquara, no fatal accidents were recorded during the period.

In Sapiranga, the deaths occurred between kilometers 26 and 31 (between the central area and the Sete de Setembro neighborhood), a stretch with a large urban concentration and where there are no walkways. In 2024 alone, three people lost their lives on the stretch.

In Parobé, there are two dangerous points, according to statistics. One of them is kilometer 43, at Mosmann Alimentos, and the other is kilometer 47, at the so-called “Sinaleira do Rubinho”.

In each of these points, two people died in accidents in the last 12 months. In fact, the last two fatal accidents on RS-239 were recorded in Parobé, at kilometer 47.

In Novo Hamburgo, two deaths occurred at kilometer 16, between Feevale campus 2 and the São Jorge viaduct. The other incident was at kilometer 15, close to a nightclub.

Claims are made to EGR

In February, the city of Sapiranga and the command of the 3rd Road Battalion forwarded demands to the Empresa Gaúcha de Rodovias (EGR) to try to reduce the number of deaths in 239.

The 2nd Company of the CRBM, commanded by Captain Rodrigo Frazzon, sent a letter with more than ten notes, outlining the need to build walkways along the highway and install barriers to prevent pedestrians from crossing in inappropriate locations.

Furthermore, according to the Highway Command, darkness on the highway is also a problem.

Sapiranga city hall reinforced the request for walkways in the urban section and requested the installation of another speed controller in the central part, close to factories, where there was a controller that was removed.

Furthermore, he called for other improvements, such as the completion of the road loops on the side streets and the side lanes themselves along the stretch.

In the case of Novo Hamburgo, in addition to residents of the São Jorge and São José neighborhoods, the city hall also formally charged EGR with the installation of a pedestrian walkway at Rua Germano Gerhardt, close to the speed controller.

The city hall also remembers that last year it completed the lighting of the entire Hamburg section of RS-239, in an investment of more than R$ 1.3 million, even though it is not the responsibility of the Municipality, both because it is a state highway and mainly because it is a toll highway.

After the installation of public lighting, fatal accidents were no longer recorded in the Hamburg perimeter. The CRBM attributed the cases registered in 2023, in part, to the low visibility of drivers due to the darkness on the stretch.

EGR announced that it is developing a technical and economic feasibility study regarding the construction of new walkways on 239, but did not provide a deadline for completing the study.
