For the first time, Mato Grosso do Sul will allocate public money to researchers studying how to reduce the effects of climate change in the State. A notice was opened yesterday (1st) to officially receive proposals for financing.

The total resource will be R$6 million. It will be divided to finance 40 to 45 different research projects, with each researcher having between R$200,000 and R$400,000 to produce their theses.

Fundect (Foundation to Support the Development of Education, Science and Technology of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul), a body linked to the state government, will select and allocate the resources. Registrations can be made on the institution’s website, until May 13, only by researchers linked to scientific and technological institutions and universities based in Mato Grosso do Sul.

Research should propose the development of technologies, products, processes, services and public policies that contribute to mitigating the impacts of changes in temperature and climate patterns.

Forum – The notice was officially launched by Governor Eduardo Riedel, yesterday, at the opening of the State Forum on Climate Change of Mato Grosso do Sul, in Campo Grande.

“We have to base our discussions on climate change on science, knowledge, whether from academia, Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation), institutes and foundations”, stressed the governor.

The notice is aligned with the final programs of the Multi-Year Plan of the Government of Mato Grosso do Sul 2024-2027, as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the head of the Executive also highlighted.

Fundect’s CEO, Márcio Pereira, stated during the forum that the financial incentive for research represents the State’s commitment to facing climate change by seeking concrete and innovative solutions.

“Science can help us mitigate the impacts caused by the increased frequency and intensity of extreme climate events, mainly on biodiversity, food and water security and social and economic inequalities. Our State today aims to be green, sustainable and inclusive , which is why Fundect created this notice that meets these objectives, tackling global warming. I am sure that the work carried out here will be a national difference”, he concludes.
