World Autism Awareness Day, celebrated this April 2nd, is an opportunity to highlight the importance of acceptance and inclusion of people on the autism spectrum. It is time to also highlight that mothers of autistic individuals face unique challenges. Since 2017, artists from 4 Art Tattoo have been offering support to these mothers in the form of artistic expression: free tattoos with the art of the autism symbol.

The tattoos will be offered free of charge to mothers who identify as atypical, an umbrella term that includes mothers of children with special needs, including autism.

“We believe that this initiative not only offers a tangible form of support, but also highlights the beauty of diversity and community”, comments Gilson Dreadlock, creator of the project and father of little Noah, who was diagnosed with autism at age 2.

The initiative aims to not only provide free tattoos, but also create a safe and welcoming space for atypical mothers to connect and share their experiences.

Resident of Barro Vermelho, São Gonçalo, Thais Alves, mother of Maria Luiza, and Pedro Raphael, 5, diagnosed as autistic, participated in the solidarity action carried out about two years ago.

“I got the tattoo because autism is not only part of my son’s life, but also mine. Knowing and understanding autism made me love it even more. So as soon as I found out, I thought it was really cool, I immediately wanted to do it. Today, everything involving autism I try to be present, even in the midst of the rush. When they see it, they ask ‘Are you an atypical mother?’ It’s important because it also signals other atypical people and mothers,” he said. Another new feature is the personalized identification bracelet developed by the brand, an exclusive item for 4 Art Tattoo customers.
