On World Autism Awareness Day, mothers and fathers of children with disabilities took advantage of the date to protest against health plans that canceled contracts for people with some type of need.

The demonstration takes place in front of the Rio Legislative Assembly (Alerj) and will then head towards the Rio Court of Justice (TJRJ).

According to the organizers, families are facing several challenges with the constant cancellations of health plans.

Last year, during a public hearing promoted by the Alerj Commission for Persons with Disabilities, deputies asked for a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to be opened to investigate unilateral cancellations and the provision of plan services.

Dayane Valêncio, mother of an atypical child, highlights that, even with up-to-date health insurance, companies do not comply with court decisions that require treatments.

“Not only autistic people (who do not have care). But all children with disabilities are without treatment, because the health plans are not passing on the payment to the clinics. All families have injunctions that oblige the health plans to pay for the treatments for our children. They are autistic children, with rare syndromes, Down syndrome, Rett syndrome, and children who, without treatment, not only do not progress, but can also aspirate”, says the woman, who adds:

“They need treatment to survive. Many children need respiratory treatment. If they don’t have treatment, they die. We are talking about lives. For health plans, our children are just numbers. But, they are not. They deserve quality of life, they deserve respect and they deserve to be heard. We are up to date with our plans. We want the judiciary to ensure that the law is complied with, because we already have the injunctions.”

TV Globo tries to contact health plans and the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) about complaints from fathers and mothers.
