The city of Picos, located in the heart of Piauí, is about to benefit from a significant financial contribution from the Fund for the Maintenance and Development of Basic Education and the Valorization of Education Professionals (Fundeb). The Ministry of Education (MEC) announced that the municipality will receive an estimated amount of R$39,048,870.10, a portion of the total R$1.3 billion allocated to the state of Piauí until the end of 2024.

This investment is part of the federal government’s ongoing effort to promote quality education throughout the national territory. With a total revenue forecast of R$287.4 billion for Fundeb in 2024, Brazil reaffirms its commitment to the development of basic education, from daycare to secondary education.

Fundeb resources are essential for implementing improvements in school infrastructure, valuing education professionals and ensuring quality education for all students. Current legislation establishes that at least 70% of the resources received by each municipality must be applied to the remuneration of basic education professionals in active practice.

Furthermore, the legislation provides for the possibility of distributing allowances, known as “Fundeb apportionment”, to education professionals, if resources exceed what is necessary to pay salaries. This mechanism ensures that any surpluses are donated directly to workers, contributing to their appreciation and motivation.

Fundeb, which replaced the Fund for Maintenance and Development of Elementary Education and Valorization of Teaching (Fundef) in force since 2007, has been a crucial instrument in distributing resources for basic education across the country. With the new injection of resources, Picos and other cities in Piauí have the opportunity to significantly advance the quality of education offered to their young people and children, shaping a more promising future for the next generations.
