Doctor from RS detained for sexual harassment in Egypt in 2021 is suspended for violating the Code of Ethics | Rio Grande do Sul

O doctor Victor Sorrentino he was prevented from exercising the profession after suffering punishment for violate articles of the Code of Medical Ethics, by decision of the Federal Council of Medicine. The professional, who works in Porto Alegre, will not be able to work for a period of 29 days – between March 25th and April 23rd.

The doctor’s office told g1 that the punishment “is extremely disproportionate, since the accusation is of an administrative nature and refers to the advertising adopted by Dr. Sorrentino for marketing and advertising purposes.” Read the full note below.

According to the Regional Council of Medicine of Rio Grande do Sul (Cremers), the decision was taken by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) based on the following articles:

• Article 18: Disobey the rulings and resolutions of the Federal and Regional Councils of Medicine or disrespect them
• Article 35: Exaggerating the severity of the diagnosis or prognosis, complicating therapy or exceeding the number of visits, consultations or any other medical procedures
• Article 68: Carry out the profession with interaction or dependence on a pharmacy, pharmaceutical industry, optics or any organization dedicated to the manufacture, manipulation, promotion or sale of medical prescription products, whatever their nature.
• Article 112: Disseminate information on medical matters in a sensationalist, promotional or untrue manner.

What motivated the process is maintained confidential by CFM. However, punishment refers exclusively to professional performancewithout relation to cases that may be processed against the doctor in the common courts.

Sorrentino is barred from practicing medicine in any field. The sanction is published in the Official Gazette of the Union and has national coverage.

Victor Sorrentino was arrested on May 30, 2021, following the repercussions of a video recorded six days earlier in a papyrus shop in the city of Cairo, capital of Egypt. In the images, he asks a saleswoman questions with sexual connotations.

The doctor is at a tourist bazaar, and a woman, an attendant at the establishment, shows how papyrus is made, a type of paper used by the ancient Egyptians for writing. The Brazilian appears asking her in Portuguese:

“You guys really like it really hard, right?”

Then, in a mocking tone, Sorrentino further states: “And fulfilled (sic) is also cool, right?” The saleswoman, who doesn’t really understand what was said, answers “yes”, while her friends and the doctor laugh.

Authorities from the Egyptian body equivalent to the Public Ministry investigated the case after the repercussion of the video. A movement of activists in Brazil made the images reach Egyptians.

“Activists on these sites were able to translate these abuses and it was clear in the clip that the girl was ridiculed and appeared to be smiling distractedly, unaware of the verbal abuse,” the agency said.

Sorrentino was detained on May 30, 2021, on his way to Cairo Airport. Authorities questioned the Brazilian for “exposing the victim to sexual innuendo and innuendo with words, his transgression of the principles of family and values ​​of Egyptian society, his violation of the sanctity of the victim’s private life and his use of his private online account to commit these crimes.”

In the session, Sorrentino allegedly claimed that he told the saleswoman phrases with sexual connotations and that he published the video as a joke. According to the agency, the doctor apologized to the victim after the repercussions of the case.
