‘Never apologized’
I went home, determined to hold my abuser accountable. I called the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and asked for Rucker’s phone number. To my surprise, I managed to get in touch. Today I don’t think they would do that. They are more cautious.
I called and a priest answered. I asked if I could speak to Rucker, but hung up before he could answer. I didn’t know what to say. I then decided to report the rape to the nun who coordinated the workshop.
After the complaint, I received a letter from Rucker’s lawyer. He said that my word would never prevail over the priest’s. I replied that if Rucker didn’t meet with me, I would tell the press everything. We set up a meeting.
At no point did Rucker apologize. On the contrary. He said I had the misfortune of being “in the wrong place at the wrong time.” He claimed that the abuse had happened only once and that he was taking hormones at the time. I didn’t get the redemption I wanted, but I was proud of myself. Little Mary was able to speak that day.
Although the crime had already expired, a civil lawsuit was filed against Rucker and the church in 2006. Four years earlier, he had been removed from office due to accusations involving 16 victims. Today, it is known that he abused at least 44 girls.
