Rio – A leak from a manila is causing problems for residents of the Tavares Bastos community, in Catete, South Zone of Rio. Residents reported to the DAY that, whenever it rains, houses are hit by water that comes down from the forest because of the problem.

The shackle, located on José Gomes Talarico Street, became a headache just over a month ago. Videos show water seeping through walls into houses.

The water starts to fall whenever it rains in the region and continues to fall for the following days, even without rain, which causes losses such as loss of furniture and appliances.

According to producer Kleber Reis, the residents themselves decided to maintain the shackle, in an attempt to solve the problem, but without success.

“When it rains, water comes down. There’s a manhole that lets water in there and goes down to the street, but I think it’s bad and water is leaking underneath. We’ve already cleaned it, we’ve done everything and water is coming into the neighbors’ houses”, explained.

According to the report, another resident, now elderly, spends rainy nights awake in fear of having her house flooded due to the problem. “There is a lady who is now taking two boxes of medicine, she doesn’t sleep, she has huge dark circles under her eyes, she just keeps crying because of her house”, she lamented.

Kleber also says that he contacted Águas do Rio, but was informed that the company does not deal with problems caused by rainwater. The producer then approached Rio City Hall, which gave him 15 days to go to the location.

Joelma, also a resident of the community, had her house hit by water which, despite being clean, caused several problems. “Clean water is leaking onto the wall of my living room and has already reached the wall that leads to my bedroom”, she said.

When contacted, Águas do Rio informed, in a note, that “the rainwater galleries (structure used to drain rainwater) are not under its management.” Rio City Hall said it will send technicians to the site to inspect and evaluate the problem.
