The Individual Identification and Traceability System for Cattle and Buffaloes of Santa Catarina (SRBOV-SC) celebrates 16 years of operation on March 31, 2024. This identification and monitoring system, led by the Animal Health Defense Department of Companhia Integrada de Agricultural Development of Santa Catarina (Cidasc), has played a vital role in promoting herd health security. With this identification it is possible to monitor the entire movement of the animals, such as knowing which municipality and which property each one comes from, where it was born and where it was slaughtered.

Since its beginning, 16 years ago, as the Santa Catarina Cattle and Buffalo Individual Identification Project (PIB-SC), today consolidated as the Traceability System (SRBOV-SC), it has been a model of efficiency, reference and excellence in across the country and expanded to the entire territory of Santa Catarina, identifying, to date, more than 4.6 million animals. Through registration in the Agricultural Defense Management System (Sigen+) and the allocation of official state identification earrings, each animal receives a unique identification, allowing precise tracking of its origin and movement. This initiative not only promotes the health security of the herd and unique health, but also strengthens Santa Catarina as a reference in quality and animal health safety.

The president of Cidasc, Celles Regina de Matos, emphasizes the importance of the continuous work carried out by the company’s professionals, which goes beyond the identification and traceability of animals, also encompassing the control of the transit of animals and products of animal origin. Furthermore, the crucial support from the Santa Catarina Institute of Agricultural Health (Icasa) and the commitment of rural producers are highlighted, which are fundamental to the success of the program. “Thanks to these joint efforts, Santa Catarina has been internationally recognized for the quality of its agricultural products and care for the health of its herds”, comments Celles Regina de Matos, president of Cidasc.

“Cattle traceability offers several advantages, including ensuring food safety by allowing accurate identification and tracking of animals throughout the production chain. It helps monitor and control diseases, enables the implementation of more efficient management practices, improves production management and promotes transparency in the market, increasing consumer confidence in products of bovine origin”, emphasizes the Cidasc veterinarian and responsible for Bovine and Buffalo Traceability, Fábio de Carvalho Ferreira.

In addition to the identification and traceability of cattle and buffaloes, Cidasc also controls the transit of animals and products of animal origin. We have 57 Fixed Agricultural Inspection Posts on the borders with Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, and on the border with Argentina. The company’s professionals continually carry out clinical inspections and serological studies on the herds, in addition to having an alert structure to investigate any suspected illness that is reported by producers or any citizen.

Cidasc has the support of Icasa in inspections of Santa Catarina’s herds and in providing assistance to rural producers in the Community Service Offices (EAC). The sum of these efforts led to the recognition of Santa Catarina as an international reference for the quality of its products and constant care for the health of its herds. Year after year, agribusiness in Santa Catarina has stood out and expanded its international presence and today accounts for more than 70% of exports.

History

On March 31, 2008, the then governor of the State of Santa Catarina, Luiz Henrique da Silveira, the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Antonio Ceron, the president of the Santa Catarina Integrated Agricultural Development Company (Cidasc), Edson Henrique Veran and the president of the Santa Catarina Institute of Agricultural Health (Icasa), Ricardo De Gouvêa, accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Reinhold Stephanes, the president of the Agriculture Commission of the Italian Senate, Paolo De Castro (former minister of agriculture) and the president of the Union of Importers of Meat and Meat Products in Italy, Renzo Fossato, met in Florianópolis, for the solemn ceremony of completing the Individual Identification of Cattle and Buffaloes in Santa Catarina.

The identification of the first animals was carried out only in some municipalities, through a pilot project and, from May 2008, it expanded to the entire territory of Santa Catarina. In this first stage, 4.1 million cattle and buffaloes were identified, which provided the update of data on rural properties, in the animal health management system at the time. All animals received identification earrings, one in each ear, with visual characteristics unique to the State of Santa Catarina. The individual identification number of each earring, which the animal receives, follows the standard of the Brazilian System of Identification and Certification of Bovine and Buffalo Origin (Sisbov), of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa).
