The energy stolen throughout the state of Mato Grosso, during the year 2023, would be enough to supply the municipality of Juara, which has 35,121 inhabitants, according to the latest Census. The data is from the concessionaire Energisa Mato Grosso.

According to the company, in 2023, 68 GWH of energy were stolen with the famous ‘cats’. The amount generated a loss of R$20 million in taxes to the state.

An operation carried out by the Chapada dos Guimarães Police Station, last Wednesday (27), discovered energy leaks in five meters at inns and marinas in Manso. In 2023, in this region alone, around 133,860 kWh of energy will be generated, generating a loss of R$45,485.52 in state and federal taxes.

Crime

Energy theft is a crime provided for in article 155 of the Penal Code, with a penalty of up to four years in prison and a fine for all energy consumed and not billed. Tampering with the meter constitutes the crime of embezzlement.
