Mato Grosso is the state with the highest number of defaulters in Brazil, according to Serasa. More than half of the state’s population has unpaid debts claimed by creditors.

Of the 1.4 million people in Mato Grosso in debt, 27.41% owe some essential services such as water, energy or sewage.

Average consumer debt is R$ 5,556, that is, around three minimum wages. Check out the ranking that reveals which are the main creditors:

  • Retail – 24.51%
  • Service – 12.83%

Conflicting data

A survey released by the website Uol on Tuesday (26), based on the map of inequalities between Brazilian capitals, showed that Cuiabá is the least unequal capital in the Central-West region.

Furthermore, the capital occupies 7th place, which qualifies the municipality as the least unequal capital in the Central-West. The survey also shows that the capital of Mato Grosso is the third city with the lowest percentage of poverty.

In contrast, the Survey by the Market Intelligence Center of the CDL (Chamber of Store Managers) in Cuiabá indicates that default rates in Mato Grosso increased by 3.08% in February 2024.

In total, there are 35,960 more people who closed the month with late bills compared to January. In comparison with the same period of the previous year, the increase was 5.12%.

Regarding the profile of defaulters in Mato Grosso, just over 26% of debtors who are in the red are between 30 and 39 years old.
