The Public Security Secretariat of the Federal District (SSP-DF), through the Federal District Traffic Council (Contrandife), and the Federal District Traffic Department (Detran-DF) joined the Archdiocese of Brasília for movement actions Yellow May 2024. With the theme “Peace in traffic begins with you”, the movement seeks to raise awareness about everyone’s role in traffic. The initiative warns of the high rate of deaths and injuries in traffic around the world.

In total, 160 parishes will receive educational work for children during meetings in churches throughout the month of May, in addition to the distribution of educational material on the importance of respect for others

The meeting took place this Friday morning (26) at the Metropolitan Curia of Brasília between the archbishop of Brasília, Dom Paulo Cezar Costa; the vice-president of the Federal District Traffic Council, Arthur Magalhães, and the director of Traffic Education (Detran-DF), Paula Numan. In total, 160 parishes will receive educational work for children during meetings in churches throughout the month of May, in addition to the distribution of educational material on the importance of respect for others.

“The participation of different segments of society is essential for building an increasingly better DF to live in. And the DF Mais Seguro – Integral Security program has this as a principle for our security policies. Therefore, this is a very relevant partnership so that we can work with children, which is an effective way of raising awareness, whether in traffic or other topics, such as respect for women”, highlights the Secretary of Public Security, Sandro Avelar.

The Archbishop of Brasília, Dom Paulo, recalled the importance of a message of peace being sent through different areas of society. “The movement is fully aligned with the theme of this year’s Fraternity Campaign, entitled Fraternity and Social Friendship. With the blessings of the Lord Jesus Christ, we will ensure that the message of peace in traffic reaches all families”, he concluded.

The vice-president of Contrandife recalled that recklessness is still the factor that causes the most accidents and deaths. “Traffic constitutes a space for social coexistence, and it is necessary for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to be aware that their responsibilities and care begin with their actions of respect for others”, highlighted Arthur Magalhães.

The Yellow May Movement, created in 2013, aims to draw society’s attention to the high rate of deaths and injuries in traffic around the world. This is a coordinated action between public authorities and civil society, which is dedicated annually to putting the issue of road safety on the agenda and mobilizing the whole of society to engage the population in awareness-raising actions.
