Organized by the Paraíba Democracy Memorial, the Casa de José Américo Foundation (FCJA), and the Paraibano Memory, Truth and Justice Committee, the ‘Walk of Silence’ takes place for the first time in João Pessoa, next Monday (1st). – Dictatorship Never Again!’. The event is part of a national program in memory of the 60th anniversary of the 1964 dictatorship.

The demonstration will take place from 3pm, in front of the headquarters of the Brazilian Bar Association in Paraíba (OAB-PB), at Rua Rodrigues de Aquino, 37, in the center of the capital of Paraíba. The walk is scheduled to start at 4pm, covering symbolic points in the city of João Pessoa, with a final destination at Lagoa do Parque Solon de Lucena, also in the center of the capital.

The political-cultural act in memory of the victims of the dictatorship, which lasted for 21 years in the country from 1964 onwards, will be a silent demonstration in the search for reparation measures from the Brazilian state to the victims of the regime installed in the 1960s and which reached first half of the 1980s.

“We will take to the streets in silence, serene and eloquent against the impunity of crimes committed”, explains sociologist Fernanda Rocha, one of the coordinators of the FCJA Democracy Memorial. “We will demand that the Brazilian state fulfills its duty of reparation and makes a public request for forgiveness to the victims and families of the dead and missing politicians”, adds historian Suelen Andrade, another coordinator of the Memorial.

During the ‘Walk of Silence’ the reinstallation of the Special Commission on the Dead and Missing will be called for. The commission is seen as an essential instrument for continuing investigations and identifying the bodies of the missing.

During the event, there will be music, a cultural attraction with Pife Parahyba, some speeches from relatives of the dead and missing politicians and representations of the institutions that support the event. The walk will be silent, with posters and photos of the missing being displayed.

Document collection

To mark 60 years of the military dictatorship in Brazil, on Monday morning (1st), at 9 am, in the Auditorium of the Education Center (CE), of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), in the Capital, there will be the delivery of collection of original documents from the dictatorship in Paraíba for the Democracy Memorial of the Casa de José Américo Foundation.

At this event, which precedes the ‘Walk of Silence’, professor Lúcia Guerra, executive manager of Documentation and Archives at FCJA, informs that a seminar will take place with professor Afonso Scocuglia, on the relevance of historiography for understanding Brazilian current affairs.
