Mato Grosso do Sul had 7,678 divorces in 2022, an increase of 42.6% compared to 2021, when there were 5,385. As a result, the State has the second highest rate of separations in Brazil. The data are from the “Civil Registry Statistics” survey, released by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

On average, men divorce at older ages than women. In 2022, at the date of divorce, men were, on average, 43 years old, while women were 40 years old.

In the State, in 2010, the average time between the date of marriage and the date of the divorce decree or deed was 17.1 years. In 2022, there was a decrease in the duration of marriage to 11.6 years, being the 3rd shortest time among the Federation Units.

It was observed that the highest proportion of separations occurred in families with only minor children, which reached 44.8%. Next are families without children (34.2%); families with only older children (14.4%); and with older and younger children (6.5%).

Weddings – On the other hand, Mato Grosso do Sul registered 15,038 marriages in 2022, an increase of 6.1% compared to the previous year.

Of the total marriages in 2022, 14,893 were between male and female spouses, 48 between male spouses and 97 between female spouses.

According to the research, since 2017, the number of marriage registrations has shown a downward trend.

The decrease is even more significant between 2019 and 2020, and may be related to the Covid-19 pandemic scenario and health guidelines for social distancing.

The precautions adopted made holding ceremonies unfeasible and caused couples to postpone their decision to get married.

In 2021, the number of marriage registrations did not exceed the average for the five years prior to the pandemic (2015 to 2019). From 2021 to 2022, the number of marriages also grew, but still remained below the average from 2015 to 2019 (16,859 for MS).
