With the popularization of surfing among Brazilians, the search for new waves in different destinations has increased considerably each year. Therefore, anyone who enjoys the combination of beach, sun, natural beauty and, above all, waves and a lot of adrenaline should visit and venture into the region close to the Portuguese capital, considered one of the best surfing destinations in the world.

Of extreme importance for local tourism as it attracts thousands of visitors throughout the year, the region has an enviable range of beaches that stand out for their unique beauty, quality and ease of access – less than an hour from the center of Lisbon -, from small ones found in urban areas, passing through those that are part of the route to Cascais, until reaching the large sandy beaches of Caparica, to the south or Ericeira to the west.

Many of them are often chosen to host surfing championships.

Ericeira World Reserve

Starting with Ericeira, the 1st Surfing Reserve in Europe and the 2nd in the world, officially recognized by the North American organization Save the Waves Coalition. The quality and consistency of the waves, the importance for the sport and its history, the environmental characteristics, the temperate climate, the diversity of maritime flora and fauna, in addition to the support of
local community were the criteria that guaranteed such recognition.

It is no coincidence that Ericeira was chosen to host the third phase of the MEO Surf 2024 League on the 24th, 25th and 26th of May, promising a great season, led by the new generation looking to renew the national category. The region will also host the penultimate stage of the 2024 World Surfing League (WSL) access circuit competition, between September 29th and October 6th, which should take place at Praia de Ribeira d’Ilhas.

Also ideal for beginner surfers due to the diversity of levels of demand of its waves, the beaches of Ericeira also please those who just want to get into the sea, get on the board and be able to admire the indescribable view that the place offers. The main stretch extends from Praia da Empa to Praia de São Lourenço, in the parish of Santo Isidoro.

In total, seven waves are considered world class in a space of 4 km from the beaches Pedra Branca, Reef, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Cave, Crazy Left, Coxos and São Lourenço.

Costa da Caparica
To the south, the Atlantic coast of the coastal zone is one of the rare places in the world that combines high quantity and quality in its waves, making it a great option for those who want to learn the sport. Along 11 km of coast, there are 22 with different characteristics, which makes surfing possible under different weather conditions.

Regardless of the season, the beaches of Costa da Caparica are the favorites of Lisbon residents, with options for all tastes and audiences, including surfers looking for a place even closer and with easy access to the capital. With approximately 15 km in length, the beaches of Cova do Vapor, CDS, Santo Antônio, Norte and Nova Vaga stand out.

In all of them, there are several restaurants and bars, as well as a bus line that runs throughout the summer.

Also close to Lisbon, another well-known spot among experienced and novice surfers is Carcavelos beach, which has several surf schools and enthusiasts. In the middle of the Sintra/Cascais Natural Park, the attraction goes to Cresmina and Praia do Guincho, this
the latter famous for its strong winds. Overlooking Cabo da Roca, the region tends to receive many windsurfers and kitesurfers.
