Last Tuesday (7), Nacional and River Plate faced each other in the fourth round of the Libertadores in a game that was marked by violent tackles, beatings and refereeing controversies.
The referee responsible for the match, which ended 2-2, was Anderson Daronco: a Brazilian referee known for his controversial refereeing. In the game, his decision divided opinions after ignoring an absurd tackle by defender Leandro Lozano, from Nacional, on Rodrigo Aliendro, from River Plate.
Daronco was called by the VAR to review the entry and maintained his decision on the field, only warning the defender with a yellow card. After the play, a huge, widespread fight took over the match and after another controversial move, the referee was called again for VAR analysis.
Through the video referee’s cameras it is possible to see the image of Franco Romero, from Nacional, hitting Paulo Díaz, from River Plate, with a punch to the face. Daronco analyzed the images in the video and chose to warn the Nacional player, only with a yellow card.

After the match, defender Diego Polenta, captain of Nacional, congratulated the Brazilian referee for his performance and said:
-We have to congratulate the referee who also let them play. This is football, let them play, it’s the Copa Libertadores…. This is the Copa Libertadores and that’s the beauty of football too, because that’s what it’s all about –
-He has muscle, but I respect him because he is one of the best in America – he added.
The Nacional coach also congratulated Daronco’s refereeing for ‘being like in the old cups’.
– The second half was an old-fashioned cup game, with riots, fights and strong finishes from both teams. The game was played with a lot of strength and passion – added Álvaro Recoba.
