The invasion of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 shook American democracy. At stake was the certification of Joe Biden as president of the United States – he who had won the election against then-president Donald Trump, who alleged fraud at the polls, without presenting evidence. In Brasília, Trump’s speech was echoed by Jair Bolsonaro and raised an alarm in the White House. Already under the Biden administration, senior US government officials acted in Brazil to mitigate Bolsonaro’s coup actions, corner military commanders who joined the anti-democratic project and guarantee free elections in the country.
