Suspects of killing an 81-year-old businessman to steal R$5,000 are arrested by the Civil Police | Tocantins

Two men were arrested this Wednesday morning (27) on suspicion of killing 81-year-old businessman Afonso Alves Carvalho. According to the Civil Police, the criminals committed the murder to steal R$5,000 from the victim.

The crime took place on January 31, in Novo Concordo, in the central region of the state. The suspects are 18 and 20 years old, but their names were not released and g1 was unable to contact their defense.

“On the day of the crime, one of the perpetrators saw the victim withdraw funds from his bank account. He then invited the other suspect to steal the money from the elderly man,” said police chief Fabrício Piassi.

Afonso Alves had a bar and lived in the same place. On the day of the crime, the pair waited for nightfall and the victim to close the establishment before entering the place.

Police reported that one of the suspects unlocked the establishment’s bathroom and managed to enter the bar. Soon after, he opened the back door for the other suspect.

The pair went to the victim’s room, which was locked. They broke down the door and found the elderly man standing. Afonso Alves still reacted and tried to prevent the robbery.

“One of the perpetrators applied the blow known as rear-naked choke, constricting the victim’s neck with his hands, causing his death from mechanical asphyxiation resulting from strangulation. After the elderly man’s death, the pair searched the place and subtracted the amount of approximately of R$5,000, fleeing shortly afterwards”, explained the delegate.

Initially, the police stated that there were no signs of violence, but soon after examinations found that the elderly man had been murdered by asphyxiation.

The two suspects were arrested by agents from the 6th Region of Porto Nacional, in compliance with preventive detention orders issued by the Court.

One of the suspects was found in Lizarda and the other in Novo Concordo. After arrest, they went through legal procedures and were sent to the Palmas Prison Unit.
