Ascom Museum of Image and Sound of Ceará – Text and Photos

The Museum of Image and Sound of Ceará celebrates its 2nd anniversary of reopening on March 31st, Sunday, from 6pm. After the institutional ceremony, there will be a musical performance by the group Syntagma at 7pm. The event takes place in the MIS square and is free. The MIS is part of the Public Network of Cultural Equipment of the Secretariat of Culture of the State of Ceará (Secult), with partner management from the Instituto Mirante de Cultura e Arte.

2 years of reopening, 44 years of existence

On March 31, 2024, MIS completes 2 years since its reopening after the renovation of the Casarão and the construction of the square and Annex. In total, this cultural facility created in 1980 has existed for 44 years, aimed at safeguarding and disseminating the images and sounds of Ceará.

The new environments delivered in the renovation completed in 2022 house exhibition spaces, library, auditorium, multipurpose room, laboratories for digital restoration of the collection, expansion and printing laboratories, technical reserve, photography, video and sound studios and editing islands. One of the biggest highlights is the so-called immersive room, a space with 10 projectors for multimedia installations. Projecting images onto the four walls and the floor and featuring a powerful audio system, the space immerses visitors within the projected images, offering an incredible immersive experience. Outside the museum, there is a pet-friendly square with bleachers. The space frequently hosts conversation circles, open classes, screenings, shows and even capoeira circles. Visitors and passers-by can enjoy video displays on an external screen and video mapping projections made on the facade of the annex.

With this structure, MIS-CE has become an active cultural space, offering the public different activities, such as simultaneous exhibitions, training actions (mediated visits to schools and groups, courses and lectures), video screenings, musical performances, etc. . Internally, the institution carries out digitization and digital restoration services, preserving important items from the memory of Ceará culture.

Over the last two years, the Museum has been consolidating its importance as a strategic cultural facility to preserve, disseminate and reflect on Ceará’s memory, while stimulating and promoting dialogue with contemporary experimental audiovisual production, in line with Secult Ceará’s policies. Currently, MIS Ceará is one of the most advanced museums in South America.

Birthday schedule

Throughout this coming Sunday (31st), MIS will promote various cultural activities, in addition to holding an institutional ceremony at 6pm. All programming is free and open to the public.

At 3pm, the mediated visit “Casarão inside and out” begins. Led by educator Alisson Freitas, this mediation promotes a tour of the old MIS mansion, a building dating back to 1950. Furthermore, the educator shares the history of the building, its initial use as a residence and subsequent uses, until it became the MIS headquarters in 1996. At 5pm, “Vem loitering at the museum” takes place, a monthly capoeira circle led by Mestre Urso Preto, from the Campo do América community. The circle always takes place on the last Sunday of each month. At 6pm, there will be an institutional moment, with the presentation of results and products. And finally, at 7pm, there will be a musical performance by the group Syntagma.

Syntagma Group

Syntagma is a chamber music group from Ceará that values all the personality and richness of northeastern culture, creating a sensitive fusion of the new and the old, the erudite and the popular. It has been bringing early music and contemporary Brazilian music, without elitism, to the public since 1986, being the oldest instrumental group active in Ceará and one of the most important chamber music groups in Brazil.

Syntagma’s repertoire is rich and varied, ranging from the Middle Ages to the Northeastern Baiões, passing through the Renaissance and Baroque, including the Minas Gerais baroque. The group uses a fusion of so-called “historical” or “ancient” instruments – such as recorders, harpsichord and lute – and “modern” instruments such as flutes, guitar and percussion. With this, it seeks to emphasize the symbolic link between Early Music and Northeastern Music.

The concert that will be held at MIS is called “Barroco Nordestino”, presenting an exclusively Ceará repertoire, from Alberto Nepomuceno to Liduíno Pitombeira, with an emphasis on works by Humberto Teixeira, a composer honored by MIS with an interactive exhibition of his collection. “Barroco Nordestino” brings to the Ceará public an enchanting experience with sophisticated sounds, rhythms, colors and harmonies. A unique musical experience, which is inspired by the articulation of sensitive imagination between two universes: classical music and northeastern music.
