This Tuesday, the 26th, the Civil Police carried out an investigation on the banks of the Formoso River, in Bonito (MS), where the anaconda Anajulia was found dead. Anajulia was considered a symbol of the species in the region, and has been the subject of several international studies and documentaries.

Teams from the Civil Police and criminal forensics, as well as the Environmental Military Police and a biologist, were at the place where the anaconda was found. According to delegate Pedro Ramalho, responsible for the investigations, no perforation was found on the animal.

Forensics also did not confirm the information that the snake could have been injured by a firearm. The snake was found with a scratch near its eye, without punctures, police authorities said. No projectiles were also located.

The expert will also carry out additional tests on collected materials to identify the causes of the anaconda’s death. The deadline, according to the Civil Police, is 30 days to complete the expert reports.

The death of the ‘celebrity snake’ caused commotion among authorities and environmentalists. The person who announced Anajulia’s death was Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker Cristian Dimitrius, known in the region for filming the anacondas of the Rio Formoso. The snake’s body was found on Sunday, 24.

On social media, Dimitrius confirmed that the snake found dead is actually Ana Júlia, who has already been filmed several times. She was identified based on the stains on her body, which are like fingerprints. The documentary filmmaker has been filming various species of snakes in the region for ten years.

Dutch biologist Freek Vonk, who went viral with a video of the anaconda, also made a post on social media expressing outrage at what happened.

“I’m so sad and angry at the same time! What a very sad and tragic loss. And how SICK do you have to be to do this to such a beautiful and unique animal!? This is so sad,” wrote the Dutchman.

The biologist says that the snake was healthy and could still breed more times. “The blow to biodiversity (and this species in particular) is also enormous”, he lamented.

Bonito City Hall lamented the anaconda’s death and said it is following investigations into the case.
