Bahia was highlighted in the list of beaches that received the Blue Flag in the 2023/2024 season. Salvador and Camaçari were the only cities in the Northeast that appeared more than once on the list of those covered by the seal, which ensures that the site offers the highest standards of health, safety, services, water quality and environmental education. The seal is promoted by the Foundation for Environmental Education and operated in Brazil by Instituto Ambientes em Rede.

For the fourth consecutive year, Camaçari appears on the list with the beaches of Guarajuba and Itacimirim – the first received the seal five years ago. JSalvador achieves the feat for the first time, appearing on the list with the beaches Vibração and Ponta de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupelocated on Ilha dos Frades.

To obtain the Blue Flag, several criteria related to environmental management, water quality, environmental education, safety and services, sustainable tourism and social responsibility are taken into consideration.

“In Brazil, the resolution used as a reference is CONAMA 274. Therefore, the beach or marina must fully comply with the sampling and frequency requirements governed by this legislation”, explains Valdo Pontes, laboratory manager at Cetrel, the company that carries out the analysis from the beaches of Camaçari.

According to Lúcia Bichara, Camaçari’s undersecretary of tourism, obtaining the seal demonstrates concern for management and sustainability. “To fulfill the 32 criteria we need to develop sustainable tourism, which involves the community, the public and private sector, the importance of cleaning beaches, recycling. It is also necessary to be concerned about security, provide tourist services. This corroborates our stance of protecting the environment”, says Bichara. She further adds that the municipality seeks to obtain the seal for another 3 beaches by 2026. “We have 42 kilometers of coastline with beautiful beaches, sandbanks and everything you need. We just need to adapt some other criteria, but our objective is to increase this flag on the beaches of our coast”, he says.
