Globo cancels the nine o’clock soap opera and puts another remake in its place

-

Reborn It hasn’t even reached the halfway point and Globo is already planning another remake. This time, the broadcaster will give Benedito Ruy Barbosa a “rest” and will bet on a classic from other medallions: Anything goes (1988), by Gilberto Braga, Aguinaldo Silva and Leonor Bassères.

Gloria Pires in Vale Tudo

The soap opera should premiere in March 2025, replacing Mania de Você, by João Emanuel Carneiro – which, in turn, will replace Renascer from September.

As a result, Globo ended up deciding to shelve an unpublished text that was scheduled for the time slot.

What will be the replacement for Renascer on Globo?

The remake of Pantanal (2022) broke a taboo at Globo: the network was not a fan of remakes in prime time. New versions of classic soap operas, until then, were reserved for six and seven o’clock – or even eleven o’clock, as happened with O Astro (2011).

But the success of Benedito Ruy Barbosa’s story ended up setting a precedent. And at a time when the channel found itself at a crossroads, as it needed to make up for the absence of great authors in its prime time slot. With that, the current remake of Renascer was a natural path.

And the revisit to television drama classics shouldn’t stop there. Globo has already put the hammer down and defined a new version of Vale Tudo to occupy its prime time slot in 2025. Manuela Dias, author of Justiça (2016) and Amor de Mãe (2019), is the one who will update the text.

When will the remake of Vale Tudo premiere on Globo?

João Emanuel Carneiro

Globo has not yet made Vale Tudo official, but is already working on defining the cast. The first clue was given by Manuela Dias herself who, in an interview with Mais Você, in 2022, confirmed that she was working on a new soap opera for Globoplay, but that she could not give more details.

Apparently, Globo’s initial planning was to remake Vale Tudo on streaming. However, plans changed and the project ended up on open TV. Last year, columnist Patrícia Kogut confirmed that Manuela Dias was preparing a soap opera for the 9 pm slot. Afterwards, the F5 website announced that the project in question was a new version of Vale Tudo.

Finally, the last sign that the soap opera is already a reality happened when Manuela Dias said goodbye to her monthly column on the Mina Bem Estar portal. The publication revealed that the author would leave her space temporarily to dedicate herself to a soap opera.

Why did Globo cancel the soap opera O Grande Golpe?

Interestingly, to make room for Vale Tudo, Globo ended up shelving a soap opera that had long been listed for prime time. It is O Grande Golpe, written by Ricardo Linhares and Maria Helena Nascimento.

In January 2021, the plot was already included in Globo’s planning to replace Travessia (2022). At the time, the network’s idea was to show Um Lugar ao Sol (2021), Pantanal (2022), Todas as Flores (2022) and the soap opera by Gloria Perez, in that order.

But, with the move of Todas as Flores to streaming and the advance of Travessia, plans changed. In the meantime, Walcyr Carrasco was cast in Land and Paixão and, thus, The Great Coup was postponed. Then, with the confirmation of Renascer and Mania de Você, Ricardo Linhares’ plot was postponed again.

While this was happening, Globo management even requested adjustments to the soap opera, which included a lot of international travel. However, after all this, the channel decided to shelve production, as Ricardo Linhares himself confirmed to Heloísa Tolipan’s website.

“My soap opera with Maria Helena was shelved due to costs. It would be about an international football player who goes to Saudi Arabia and then Paris. We adjusted the content, upon request, but anything beyond what we had already done would distort the work. It may come back at some point, but currently it would be very expensive to produce,” said the veteran.
