Minas Gerais registered a new record in agribusiness exports. According to data from the State Secretariat for Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa), shipments moved US$ 2.1 billion over the first two months. The value grew 15% compared to the same period in 2023 and is the highest in the historical series, which began in 1997.

The data also shows that, in the same period, the volume shipped, 1.7 million tons, was also the highest recorded between January and February. Shipments of agricultural and livestock products grew 12% compared to the same two months in 2023.

“Agribusiness exports from Minas Gerais continue to record record values. The value achieved in the first two months was more than R$2 billion. We also had record volumes. Thus, this result indicates the best performance for the months of January and February in the historical series that we have been following since 1997”, said the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Thales Fernandes.

Still according to Fernandes, the resumption of the appreciation of commodities, especially coffeewas important for the result.

“The positive performance is also the result of the work of the government of Minas Gerais, with technical assistance, research and health surveillance, which guarantee the quality of our production in Minas Gerais”.

Mining products go to 149 countries

According to Seapa data, Minas Gerais’ agribusiness exports included 397 different agricultural products. Minas Gerais production reached 149 countries.

Besides the Chinawhich accounted for 17% of the total exported value, also stood out as important trading partners U.Swith a 13% share in purchases, followed by Germany (9%), the Belgium (6%) and the Japan (4%).

Coffee leads agribusiness exports from Minas Gerais

O coffee led exports, which represented 53% of total shipment revenue. Soon after, came the complex sugar and alcohol producer (16%), meat (10%), forest products (8%) and soy complex (7%).

The main item on the export agenda, revenue generated by coffee reached US$ 1.1 billion between January and February 2024. 5.3 million bags were exported.

The main destinations for the grain were the United States, Germany, Belgium, Japan and Italy. According to Seapa, China has been proving to be a promising market for the grain, occupying the sixth position among the largest buyers and transacting US$64 million in purchases.

Other products

Agribusiness exports from Minas Gerais were also boosted by the results of the sugar-energy group and meat.

In the sugar-energy sector, according to Seapa data, there was a record in revenue, which reached US$340 million. The opening of new markets, such as India, Indonesia and Iraq, contributed to this performance. Sugar is the main item in the segment, accounting for 97% of sales.

In the first two months, sector exports totaled US$ 205 million, with an increase in sales of beef and pork. Purchases from countries such as the United States, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and Chile boosted the value of beef.

In the opposite direction, the soybean complex generated US$ 144.5 million in exports, resulting in a drop of 35%. In total, shipments totaled 283 thousand tons exported, 22% less.
