Portos do Paraná, a public company owned by the Government of Paraná, broke a new handling record in February 2024. 5,350,437 tons circulated through the ports of Antonina and Paranaguá, the best number in history for the second month of the year. The record exceeds February 2022 (5,075,118 tons) by 5%. The increase compared to February last year was 8% (4,578,808 tons).

Soy and sugar – In exports (3,146,193 tons), soybean and sugar cargoes had the biggest movement in the month. Soybeans showed a growth of 172% compared to 2023, going from 453,595 tons to 1,235,113 tons. Sugar went from 222,452 tons in February 2023 to 496,978 tons this year, representing an increase of 123%. Other highlights were oil and wheat derivatives.

Fertilizers – In terms of imports (2,204,244 tons), fertilizers had the largest volume moved, also with growth between the two months: from 803,594 tons in 2023 to 924,712 this year, representing an increase of 15%. Portos do Paraná is the main entry point for inputs into the country, representing 31.6% of national movement. There was also an expansion in the purchase of vegetable oils (from 34,783 tons to 50,191 tons), salt (from 16,188 tons to 19,562 tons) and wheat (from 58,306 tons to 74,896 tons).

First two months – Another highlight is movement in the first two months of 2024. In the months of January and February there was a 19% growth in general movement. There were 10.4 million tons this year compared to 8.7 million tons in 2023. “Our expectation is that cargo movement will continue at a high pace in the first half of the year,” said the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.

Good sequence – In January, the public company handled 5,064,683 tons, a volume 20% higher compared to the previous record recorded in January last year (4,207,257). Another record was registered in 2023, with annual movement of 65 million tons, a number that was scheduled to be reached only in 2040. Currently the largest volume leaving Paraná ports is destined for China. (State News Agency)
