Carotid and Vertebrae Doppler joint effort served 60 people in Feira de Santana – Acorda Cidade

Since May 3rd, a joint effort has been carried out for Doppler examinations of the Carotids and Vertebrae, organized by the Bahia School of Echocardiography and the Dom Pedro de Alcântara Hospital. Around 60 exams were carried out until this Sunday (5). The services were provided at the Cardiovascular Center in Feira de Santana with the participation of several professionals in the area.

The professor at the School of Echocardiography, responsible for the task force, doctor Dr. André Almeida, explained to Acorda Cidade how the service is carried out and highlighted the importance of providing this support to the community completely free of charge.

Patients were also asked to collaborate by donating 2kg of food that will be sent to the Santana Dispensary.

“This is the tenth course of the Bahia School of Echocardiography and the Dom Pedro Hospital, in Alcântara, with support from the André Almeida Clinic. This is a course designed for doctors, and we had cardiology medical students here who came from Salvador, Feira de Santana, Petrolina, Caculé, Itabuna, that is, from various places who came looking to learn, to accumulate knowledge” .

The doctor also explained how care is provided, in addition to clarifying some concepts of the specialty. The examination is carried out by both the cardiologist and the ultrasonographer who carry out the evaluation of the carotid and vertebral arteries in a non-invasive way.

“The exam is ultrasound, Doppler of the arteries, and the carotid and vertebral arteries are the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the brain. The presence of a fatty plaque and a clot in the arteries is one of the main causes of a stroke, known as a stroke, and early detection through this exam, carotid and vertebral Doppler, allows the doctor to act to reduce the risk of something terrible happening for everyone, for the patient, for the family, a person who has a relative with a stroke at home, interferes with their entire day-to-day routine”, he explained.

According to André, as in other editions, the collective’s capacity did not exceed demand. There were more than 200 requests for a limitation of 60 exams.

“This year was the same, if there was space here, we would have more than 200 people to do it, unfortunately we don’t have the time, we don’t have the space, we work with four devices simultaneously, three teachers with the students. The exams are carried out by trained medical cardiologists who are in training, but all of them are supervised by Professor Vinícius Rios, Dr. André Chateaubriand, Dr. Tiago Monteiro, and all exams and all reports are carried out after review and teacher evaluation”.

The coordinator of the task force, Dr. Vinícius Rios, spoke about the exchange of experience between doctors in the area, teachers and students in the area, above all, providing a service that is often difficult for people to access.

“We are able to bring fundamental knowledge to other cardiologist professionals that they can offer to their patients. And, concomitantly with this, we also offer patients in Feira de Santana and the region an exam that they often do not have access to, an exam that is not so cheap and is not offered easily. There is a lot of learning, for me too, obviously, but mainly for the colleagues who came and took the courses and also for the patients who had the opportunity to carry out this assessment”, he highlighted.

According to Vinicius, from the age of 40 onwards, patients who have some type of disease, some type of pathology, must undergo the procedure.

“It should be done in those patients who are indicated, at least every two years, if it is proven that the patient has disease in the carotid and vertebral arteries. Not only due to the possibility of a stroke, which we call a stroke, but also important information for heart disease and even other organ diseases”, he added.
