The Public Health Department of Rio Grande do Norte will investigate the case of a woman who underwent cesarean surgery without being pregnant. The case took place at Santa Catarina Hospital, in the North Zone of Natal, on April 18th.

The patient arrived at the hospital referred by the municipality of Guamaré. According to the medical team at Santa Catarina Hospital, the woman was indicated for a cesarean section, due to the clinical picture of the supposed pregnancy and presented a completed prenatal card and ultrasound reports. The patient She did not undergo any tests at the hospital before the cesarean section.

The woman then underwent surgery, but doctors reported that they did not find any baby. After the procedure, the team had access to a recent exam that was with the patient’s family, indicating that there was no pregnancy.

In a note, the Municipal Secretariat of Guamaré informed that referred the patient for “evaluation” at Hospital Santa Catarina and highlighted that, during prenatal consultations, it was seen that the patient had no progress in uterine height, fetal heartbeat auscultation and no weight gain, even after months of supposed pregnancy. “All this information is recorded in the electronic medical record and referrals and requests for ultrasounds were also recorded, from the beginning, on the pregnant woman’s card”, says the note.

The Health Department of Rio Grande do Norte, responsible for Hospital Santa Catarina, highlighted that the health unit follows a standard of care: every patient who arrives at the institution is treated by the emergency room team, who performs an assessment and forwards them to the obstetric center. In addition, other tests are carried out when the team considers them necessary.

Medical expert reinforces the need for exams before any surgery

A medical expert who provides services to the Justice Department of Rio Grande do Norte, obstetrician Rosana Rebelo explained that, at the hospital, the pregnant woman must undergo tests to see how the baby is doing, before giving birth.

“It is extremely important for patients to be examined before undergoing a surgical procedure, especially a cesarean section. It is essential to perform a fetal auscultation to see if everything is ok with the child and start the procedure”, he pointed out.

“In this case, perhaps she had a psychological pregnancy, or she had a pregnancy, lost it and didn’t know she lost it, and continued to think she was pregnant, and then she was referred, continued prenatal care. But the ideal is that she would be examined,” said the professional.

Rosana is also vice-president of the State Medical Association and explained that, in a case like this, the investigation must be rigorous, to clarify what happened.

“It is necessary to investigate the patient’s entire medical record, the prenatal care inside, investigate the care upon arrival at the hospital, what the medical team wrote in the medical record, to reach a conclusion”, he said.

In a statement, the Management of Hospital Santa Catarina reported that it is investigating the case with the teams involved, and also with the originating unit, which provided prenatal care and referred the patient.
