The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be discarded in cases of patients with suspected or confirmed dengue fever. Medications such as ibuprofen, dicoflenac and anaproxen can increase the risk of bleeding and kidney failure, leading to a more serious illness.

The infectious disease specialist at the Municipal Health Department (SMS), Melissa Falcão, warns that self-medication should be avoided. Therefore, when noticing a fever, the ideal is for the patient to undergo a medical evaluation.

“If there is a suspicion of dengue, the treatment of pain or fever should be carried out with common analgesics and antipyretics, such as dipyrone and paracetamol, and no anti-inflammatory should be used to control these symptoms”, he emphasized.

In the case of patients who continually use AAS, which is also classified as a non-hormonal anti-inflammatory drug, the doctor advises that the medicine be avoided or suspended in people who use it preventively.

“Up to 50 thousand people will be able to maintain their medication without the need for hospitalization. Between 30 and 50 thousand platelets, this patient needs to be hospitalized to monitor and do a daily blood count. Below 30 thousand platelets must be suspended in all patients regardless of the indication. The only person who makes this suspension is the doctor. You have to contact the specialist who accompanies you”, highlighted Melissa Falcão.

The infectious disease specialist also points out that sickle cell anemia has been one of the comorbidities frequently associated with serious cases of dengue. “All patients who have sickle cell anemia are considered group B. They are people who need to be evaluated daily, in addition to maintaining hydration, they must continue using daily medications, such as hydroxyurea and folic acid”, she reinforced.
