Have you ever heard of the “anus-eating virus” What is causing alarm in Japan? Why is this disease, which has already killed 30% of infectedis it worrying health authorities so much?

To give you an idea, in just the first two months of 2024, the country recorded 378 cases of the dreaded Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS), triggered by a bacteria called streptococcus A.

What is known about Streptococcus A?

This bacteria may seem common, as it often causes throat or skin infections. However, in some cases it becomes extremely dangerous. It can manifest itself in various parts of the body, including the genitals and anus, causing serious illnesses.

How does the disease spread?

Streptococcus A is transmitted through direct physical contact or through particles dispersed in the air by coughing and sneezing. Settings like schools and nursing homes are especially prone to outbreaks.

Can everyone be affected?

Although 941 cases of STSS were recorded in 2023, the number of those infected appears to be increasing in 2024. Surprisingly, the disease does not just affect the elderly; young people and children are also among the victims.

One shocking case involved a 14-year-old teenager who had his feet and hands amputated due to complications from the disease.

What are the symptoms?

Those affected by STSS face a series of worrying symptoms, such as:

  • Breathing difficulties;
  • Severe headache, nausea and vomiting;
  • Diarrhea and a persistent feeling of being unwell;
  • Severe muscle pain;
  • High fever;
  • Kidney problems;
  • Drop in blood pressure;
  • Failures in the functioning of the liver; It is
  • Red mucous membranes.

What explains the increase in cases?

Experts are searching for answers to the sudden rise in cases of this deadly disease. The Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) admitted its difficulty in finding explanations: “We are also not yet in a position to explain”.

This worrying outbreak in Japan highlights the urgency of understanding and combating STSS, as well as the importance of prevention and public health care on a global scale.
