In the early hours of this Thursday (28), musician Alexandre Lima passed away, aged 54. Alexandre had been in a coma for more than a decade, since 2013, and received care from his family in his own home.
Known for his participation in the group Manimal, he played a significant role in the cultural scene of Espírito Santo.
In 2013, the vocalist suffered a brain aneurysm following a heart procedure and had been in a coma ever since.
During his period in a coma, Alexandre needed special care for his health. The treatment, according to the family, cost up to R$20,000 per month.
Before falling into a coma, Lima held the position of municipal secretary of Culture in the city of Vitória.
Confirmation of the musician’s death came from his family. On social media, Alexandre’s brother, Amaro Lima said goodbye: “My brother, God called you but the boat of love that you made continues to sail. One day, we will meet again to exchange the usual. Thank you for everything. Go in peace. I love you. I also sincerely thank everyone who accompanied us and helped, in various ways, on this journey.”
Governor Renato Casagrande also spoke out on his social media. “The great musician Alexandre Lima has rested. With his talent and charisma he took Espírito Santo culture to various stages in Brazil and the world. His trajectory inspires new generations. I leave my hug of comfort to family and friends in this moment of farewell.”
Vitória City Hall announced that it regrets the singer’s death and declared three days of mourning in the capital. “Our farewell to a true icon of Espírito Santo culture! At 54 years old, Alexandre Lima leaves a legacy as the inventor of the fusion of rock and Congo (rockcongo). Along with his brother Amaro, Alex, as he was popularly known, was one of the creators of the band Manimal, which was successful throughout Brazil, even performing abroad. In 2013, he served as municipal secretary of Culture in Vitória, making great contributions to the area in the city. With regret, we declare three days of official mourning for his departure. Our thoughts are with his friends, fans and family at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Alexander.”
Alexandre’s wake will be at Teatro Sônia Cabral, in the center of Vitória, from 10 am in a ceremony restricted to family members and the burial will be in the Jardim da Paz cemetery, in Alterosas, Serra.
