Maria Adelaide Amaral makes a play based on a shelved soap opera

In mid-2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, playwright and screenwriter Maria Adelaide Amaral delved into the life of São Paulo conductor and composer Carlos Gomes (1836-1896) to produce a biographical miniseries for TV Globo.

The result was so satisfactory that the house’s then teledramaturgy director, Silvio de Abreu, ordered a soap opera for the 6pm slot based on the material delivered by the author.

However, changes in the station’s structure led Abreu to leave and Ricardo Waddington to take over the position, introducing a new work dynamic. Cost containment was the broadcaster’s main new guideline, which led to the work being shelved for an indefinite period of time – a decision that was maintained even with the director’s departure from the house in 2023.

Still immersed in Carlos Gomes’ personal universe, Amaral decided to use the research material to produce a play based on the composer’s intimate life. In this new work, the author delves into themes such as her unhappy marriage with the Italian pianist Adelina Peri (????-????), financial problems, the death of one of her children and the anguish of having her work recognized in Europe, but little remembered in Brazil.

With no defined title or release date, the project is still in the dramaturgical production phase in no rush to be ready. Although he has a successful career on TV, with miniseries such as The House of Seven Women It is The Mayans and soap operas like Ti-Ti-Ti It is Good Bloodwritten with Vincent Villari, Maria Adelaide Amaral has an extensive career in theater.

Among his main creations are Open armsa hit in the 1980s starring Juca de Oliveira and Irene Ravache, Dear Mom1994, Scenes from a Wedding1996, For So Long Love1993, Mademoiselle Chanelsuccess of Marília Pêra (1943-2015) in the 2000s, and Frida Y Diegoabout the conflictive relationship between painters Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) and Diego Rivera (1886-1957).
