AstraZeneca will withdraw COVID-19 vaccine from the market due to rare side effect

The disease has been linked to at least 81 deaths in the UK.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19 is being withdrawn from the market worldwide, months after the pharmaceutical company admitted, for the first time in court documents, that the vaccine may cause a rare and dangerous side effect which, in turn, , causes the formation of blood clots and a low blood platelet count.

The documents state that it can, in very rare cases, cause thrombosis.

According to The Telegraph, the vaccine can no longer be used in the European Union, after the company voluntarily withdrew its “marketing authorization”. The request to withdraw the vaccine was made on March 5 and came into force on Tuesday.

In the coming months, similar applications will be filed in the United Kingdom and other countries that have approved the vaccine, known as Vaxzevria.

The decision to withdraw the vaccine puts an end to the use of the vaccine, which was heralded by Boris Johnson as a “triumph of British science” and which has saved more than six million lives.

According to the same source, AstraZeneca stated that the vaccine was being withdrawn from the markets for commercial reasons, justifying that it was no longer manufactured or supplied, having been replaced by updated vaccines that combat new variants.

The disease has been linked to at least 81 deaths in the UK, as well as hundreds of serious injuries. AstraZeneca is being sued by more than 50 alleged victims and grieving family members in a High Court case.
