Journalist Antônio José do Carmo, who worked in Leaf of the Region and in Estadãoamong other vehicles, will be honored with the name of a square in Andradina. He passed away in August 2022. The tribute, presented by councilor Hugo Zamboni, was approved last Monday (29) by the local council.
His influence was not just limited to the journalistic sphere, but also extended to the region’s political and social scene. His tireless national publicity work contributed to several government investments, such as the duplication of the Marechal Rondon Highway and the construction of the Mirandópolis Municipal Palace. Furthermore, his incisive voice denounced injustices, such as the mistaken destination of resources from the Três Irmãos Plant to the Pereira Barreto City Hall, when, in fact, the generating machines were in Andradina.
Hugo Zamboni, moved by the approval of the project, highlighted the importance of perpetuating the memory of a professional who dedicated his life to communication and the development of the region. “Antônio José do Carmo was not just a journalist, but a true defender of truth and justice”, declared the councilor.
Covid
Toninho do Carmo, as he was known, was recovering from Covid-19 symptoms when he passed away. According to family members, he felt ill on the morning of August 31, 2022 and was taken to the UPA (Emergency Care Unit) in Andradina. As his condition worsened, he would be transferred to Araçatuba, but around 8pm that day he suffered cardiorespiratory arrests and could not resist.
Museum
The square that will be named after Toninho is next to his house, in Jardim Santa Cecília. The tribute opened a discussion about the revitalization of the press museum in Andradina, which has been deactivated for more than 15 years. Councilor Hugo Zamboni said he will seek resources from the Ministry of Tourism and the State to renovate the site and recover the collection, which is stored irregularly.
