José Dirceu is definitely back on the political scene. He was received with pomp and circumstance in the same Chamber of Deputies that took him from there almost 20 years ago. Not just anything can change the fate of the Lula government.
We are talking about a strategist more efficient than all participants in the current government. He has a vision of two more terms for the PT and points out that the party didn’t just win one election, it came to power. They are different things. Anyone who understands politics already knows what he means.
The situation regarding Dirceu’s return is comfortable. There was no popular revolt against him and the press didn’t even criticize him much. Apart from a few Mohicans, it was either treated as the most normal thing in the world or it wasn’t even reported. He reappears at a time when the history of Lava Jato is being rewritten. Soon, they will also rewrite the Mensalão one.
The people know what happened, the videos are there. But the official story seems to be different and part of the journalism reproduces the narrative as if it were true.
The Brazilian electorate, faced with this type of fact, oscillates between two positions. The first is passivity, asking what you can do, claiming that you can do nothing in the face of the excesses of the powerful. The other is to start taking an interest in politics but doing it in such an emotional and unprepared way that it ruins everything.
Many people who have become interested in politics know so little about the subject that they are unable to realize how much they have not mastered. It happens with several themes. When we know nothing and learn just a little, we imagine we understand what it is about. If we decide to study more, a whole universe opens up and we begin to realize how much we need to master the topic.
It’s because he doesn’t understand anything about politics but thinks he understands that Brazilians oscillate between populisms. Imagine that, faced with the malignancy of a populist, only another of the same size can fight it. That does not exist. One populist does not fight another, populism only strengthens populism, which is the opposite of democracy.
Exactly because we believe in populists we are here. Our democracy is increasingly an ally of dictatorships. Recent history is being rewritten to shield the corrupt and punish those who prosecuted them. Continuing to do the same things regarding politicians will not give us different results.
