Brazilians have been getting divorced more and more quickly, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Civil Registry data released this Thursday (27) shows that, in 2022, 970 thousand marriages and 420 thousand divorces (judicial and extrajudicial) were registered.

In other words: there was 1 divorce for every 2.3 marriages in 2022.

In 2010, there were 977 thousand marriages and 239 thousand divorces. In other words, that year, the ratio was 1 divorce for every 4 marriages.

The data also shows that divorces are happening earlier:

  • In 2010, 37.4% of divorces occurred less than 10 years after marriage;
  • In 2022, this percentage rose to 47.7%.

Divorces that occurred 20 years or more after marriage fell, from 36% in 2010 to 26.4% in 2022.

The total number of divorces in the country grew by 8.6% in the comparison between 2022 and 2021.

On average, men divorced at older ages than women. In 2022, at the date of divorce, men were on average 44 years old, and women were 41.

Divorces also happen faster and faster: the average time between the date of marriage and the date of divorce went from around 16 years in 2010 to 13.8 years in 2022.

Shared custody increasingly common

The data released by IBGE this Thursday (27) also shows that, in cases of divorce in which the couple has minor children, there is a gradual change in relation to the division of custody.

In 2014, in 85% of divorces, custody of the children remained with the woman. In 2022, this index fell to 50.3%. In the same period, shared custody increased from 7.5% to 37.8% of cases.

The number of cases in which men are responsible after divorce has been decreasing. In 2014, there were 5.5% of cases, in 2014, 3.3% (see the infographic below)
