A 6-year-old child with disabilities was killed after being thrown into a “crocodile-infested canal” by his own mother, Savitri, in Dandeli, Karnataka. The case happened in India
The crime occurred during a family argument between Savitri and her husband, Ravi Kumar Shelle, which arose due to the child’s disabilities, who was deaf and could not speak. Savitri alleged that her husband wanted her son dead, blaming him for the murder.
After throwing the child into the water, Savitri called neighbors to help with the search. Local police were alerted to the situation, and divers were sent to search for the missing boy.
The child’s body was found in the canal the following morning, showing injury marks and a missing hand, apparently due to a crocodile attack. Both Savitri and her husband were arrested and face several charges, including murder.
The couple’s youngest son and the child’s body are in the care of relatives. The crime generated commotion and outrage in India, in addition to raising debates on television programs and on the internet about mental health and the support needed for families with members with disabilities.
