High blood pressure often sets in silently, without attracting much attention. Symptoms are not always obvious, but a telltale sign may be related to the eyes.

The effects of hypertension on eye health depend entirely on how high or uncontrolled your blood pressure is.

If blood pressure is under control or slightly increased, the condition may not even cause any apparent signs. However, very high blood pressure, when left untreated, can cause blurred vision or other changes in vision, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

But why this happen?

High blood pressure causes the blood vessels in the retina to thicken and narrow, reducing blood flow. Consequently, the lack of blood flow to the retina can lead to blurred vision or even complete loss of vision, as the American Heart Association warns.

People with diabetes and high blood pressure are at an even higher risk of developing this condition. Additionally, high blood pressure can trigger other signs in the eyes, such as redness, discomfort or pain.

Therefore, when noticing these changes, it is important to see a doctor, especially if the person is aware that their blood pressure is poorly controlled.

It is crucial to remember that most people with hypertension do not experience any specific symptoms. Checking your blood pressure regularly is the best way to know if it is elevated or within normal limits.

If high blood pressure is not treated, it can cause other health problems, such as kidney disease, heart disease and stroke.

According to the WHO, people with very high blood pressure (usually 180/120 or higher) may experience symptoms such as:

  • Severe headaches
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blurred vision or other changes in vision
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Nosebleeds
  • Abnormal heart rhythm

How to Deal with High Blood Pressure?

When dealing with high blood pressure, it is essential to take effective measures to manage this condition:

  1. Consult a Doctor Regularly: Monitor your cardiovascular health with regular checkups and follow medical advice closely.
  2. Balanced diet: Consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while limiting foods high in saturated fat and sodium.
  3. Physical exercises: Exercise regularly to reduce blood pressure and improve heart health.
  4. Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol: These habits can worsen high blood pressure.
  5. Manage Stress: Chronic stress can contribute to increased blood pressure.
