The Georgia Court of Appeals reported this Wednesday (8) that it accepted to deliberate on an appeal presented by former President of the United States Donald Trump (2017-2021) and co-defendants to disqualify attorney Fani Willis from the case of an alleged their attempt to reverse the result of the presidential election in the state in 2020.
According to CNN, in a brief order issued on Wednesday, the court said it will consider the appeal of Trump and other defendants challenging a March ruling by Judge Scott McAfee that allowed Willis to remain on the case.
At the time, the magistrate had ruled that the case could continue if Willis or assistant prosecutor Nathan Wade, with whom she had a romantic relationship, dropped the case. On the same day, Wade resigned from the process. McAffee alleged evidence of “inappropriate conduct” in making the decision.
In August 2023, Willis denounced Trump and 18 other people for alleged attempts to reverse the result of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, won by Democrat Joe Biden. There is no date for the trial of the case.
Trump is a defendant in this and three other criminal cases. He is currently on trial in New York on charges that he falsified company records to hide a payment to a porn actress so that she would not reveal before the 2016 election a relationship they had had ten years earlier.
On Tuesday (7), a judge decided to indefinitely postpone Trump’s trial in Florida in the case of confidential documents found at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
Judge Aileen Cannon canceled the start date of the trial, initially scheduled for May 20, citing the need to resolve a series of issues that are still pending regarding the case, including aspects related to the Confidential Information Procedures Act (Cipa, in acronym in English).
In the fourth criminal case against Trump, the former president is accused of responsibility for the invasion of the Capitol by his supporters in January 2021.
In this case, the United States Supreme Court is analyzing Trump’s argument that he had immunity because he was president at the time, and a possible decision in favor of the Republican could have an influence on the other cases against him. In late April, the US Supreme Court heard oral arguments. The court is expected to announce its decision by the end of June.
