Inspection and capture of the suspect

Chief Inspector Larry Smith, responsible for the case, explained that police were called shortly before 7am local time (3am Brasília time) following reports of a van crashing into a fence near a metro station.

According to Smith’s account, authorities arrived at the scene within 12 minutes. The police tried to detain Monzo with spray incapacitating gun and an electric pistol, but he managed to temporarily escape.

An intense search was carried out and the suspect was captured 22 minutes after the incident began.

During the action, two police officers were seriously injured by Monzo’s attacks. One officer required extensive surgery to repair a deep cut on her arm, while the other suffered an injury to his left hand.

The police, so far, have found no evidence of the suspect’s previous involvement in criminal activities and rule out a terrorist motive for the attack.
