Some military horses, including one covered in blood, galloped through the streets of central London and injured at least four people this Wednesday.

The bizarre scenes unfolded in the heart of London, close to Buckingham Palace and the headquarters of the British government, with the escaped animals galloping alongside bewildered Londoners on their morning commute.

“A number of military work horses became loose during a routine exercise this morning. All horses have now been recovered and returned to camp,” a British Army spokesman said in a statement.

“Some people and horses were injured and are receiving appropriate medical attention.”

Medical authorities said four people were taken to hospital after being injured.

Television footage showed a saddled white horse, apparently covered in blood, running down the street alongside another black horse.

London’s Metropolitan Police had initially said authorities were working to locate “horses that are currently loose in central London”, before later confirming that all animals had been accounted for.

The horses belong to the Household Cavalry, which acts as the British monarch’s official bodyguard and takes part in ceremonial duties. They are housed in Hyde Park barracks, less than a mile from Buckingham Palace.
