Turkish politician Mehmet Palaz died after suffering a fall while celebrating a victory in Turkish municipal elections. The district vice-president of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in the Tavas region fell from the balcony where he was waving to voters and died due to the serious injuries he suffered.
The incident occurred on March 31, but his death was only confirmed by the Turkish press this Wednesday (3). Mehmet was part of the center-left political group that imposed an extensive defeat against Recep Erdogan’s AKP (Islamic center-right).
In addition to Mehmet, three other people were seriously injured as a result of the accident.
“My brother Mehmet Palaz, the fight you fought for years with effort, patience and tirelessness, should not have ended today”, lamented party companion Gulizer Biçer Karaca.

In these municipal elections, the CHP won in 35 provinces, including Ankara and Istanbul, while the AKP won 24 municipal councils. High inflation, reaching 70%, was cited as one of the reasons for this policy change. It is worth remembering that, last year, Erdogan handily won the presidential elections against Kemal Kilicdaroglu, also from the CHP, in the second round.
