A 36-year-old Spanish-Brazilian, detained after carrying out a sword attack in which a 14-year-old teenager died in London, was accused this Wednesday (1st) of murder, local police reported.

Four other people were injured, including two officers, which also led to charges of attempted murder and bodily harm, according to police in the British capital. The suspect, who has dual Spanish and Brazilian nationality, is expected to appear in court this Thursday (2).

“We are starting to get an idea of what happened on Tuesday”, but the investigation is “complex given the number of crime scenes, forensic evidence, hours of surveillance camera recordings and witnesses we have to speak to”, he explained today Chief Inspector Larry Smith, responsible for the investigation, said in a statement.

On Tuesday, police received a call “just before 7am” after several witnesses saw a van crash into a fence near a tube station in London’s Hainault region.

“A 33-year-old man was run over [pela van] and then attacked by the suspect, and suffered neck injuries”, said the person responsible for the investigation.

A 35-year-old man later suffered “lacerations to his arm” after being attacked, before the suspect attacked the teenager, who died from his injuries shortly after being taken to hospital.

The police arrived at the scene 12 minutes after the first emergency call and tried to neutralize the suspect with incapacitating spray and an electric pistol, but without success.

The suspect seriously injured two police officers and “fled again, before finding himself surrounded by other officers”, only to be finally arrested 22 minutes after the first call.

According to preliminary evidence, the police were not aware that the man was involved in previous incidents and have ruled out a terrorist motive for now.

The attack took place in a context of an increase in violent actions with bladed weapons in the United Kingdom and two days before local elections in the British capital, where the conservative opposition harshly criticizes the security policy of Labor mayor Sadiq Khan.
