A fire in a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, left at least 29 employees dead this Tuesday (April 2, 2024), according to the Associated Press. The fire spread during renovations at the nightclub. The site did not have a license to carry out the repairs.

After the incident, 8 people responsible for the site were taken by Turkish authorities for interrogation and another person was not located to answer questions. Investigations into the case are ongoing.

In videos shared on social media, while some firefighters fought the fire that was coming out of the side of the building, others took a victim on a stretcher to an ambulance.

A message on the club’s website it says “see you on April 10th”. The nightclub planned to reopen after the holy month of Ramadan ended.

On X (formerly Twitter), the city’s mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, lamented the deaths and said “what God have mercy on our citizens who lost their lives and I wish a speedy recovery to our injured.”
